Shape of Dreams Character Tier List
A Shape of Dreams Traveler tier list with its criteria stated, a sourced solo ranking, and an explanation of why published lists disagree so much.

There is no official Shape of Dreams tier list, and the published ones disagree because they rank different things. One recent list measures solo Nightmare clears, another measures co-op usefulness, and a third folds in how hard a Traveler is to unlock. Read the criteria before you read the ranking.
A sourced solo ranking, labelled as one source
The most concrete published ranking describes itself as a solo Nightmare list. Treated as one source rather than a fact:
| Tier | Travelers | The reasoning given |
|---|---|---|
| Highest | Bismuth, Mist, Aurena | Self-sufficient damage or healing that does not depend on a teammate |
| Second | Lacerta, Nachia, Yubar | Strong output with a slower ramp or a positional requirement |
| Third | Vesper, Shell | Excellent in the right hands, punishing when you misread a fight |
Cetus is absent because the list predates the Starless Path update. Every ranking built before 17 September 2026 shares that gap.
Why the lists contradict each other
Three reasons, all visible in the rankings themselves:
- Different modes. Bismuth’s auto-casting build is close to a solo win button because a single player controls all of it. In a four-player party, a Traveler who applies frost or groups enemies can be worth more than raw damage, which is exactly how the developer describes co-op.
- Different versions. Guides written for v1.1 through v1.3 predate a broad balance pass on Memories, Essences and Traveler Stars. A list labelled “updated” may still describe pre-patch behaviour.
- Different definitions of strong. Some authors rank the ceiling of a fully unlocked Traveler. Others rank the median run for someone who just unlocked the character and has three Stars filled in.
Why co-op changes the order
The developer’s own description of multiplayer is about interaction, not damage. One player freezes a group while another dumps damage into the frozen targets; someone else pulls enemies into a single point so the party can sweep them. In that environment a Traveler who never tops a damage chart can be the reason the run survives.
That also means a “weak” solo Traveler is not weak. Vesper and Shell sit low in the solo ranking above and both bring tools a party wants.
Use unlock cost as a filter
Tier lists assume you can pick any Traveler. Most players cannot. Sort by what is actually available:
- Bismuth is the cheapest unlock in the game and sits near the top of the solo ranking, so she is the obvious first long-term pick.
- Yubar unlocks through Dream Dust alone, which you accumulate regardless of results.
- Aurena needs healing output, which is a build choice rather than a grind.
- Nachia, Shell and Cetus each have a deliberate objective, so read those pages before committing.
How to test a ranking yourself
Pick one difficulty and one mode, then run the same route three times with the same Traveler. Track where you die and how long the boss takes. A ranking that survives your own three runs is more useful than any table, including this one.
