Shape of Dreams Builds: How to Build a Run

How builds work in Shape of Dreams: pick the Memory you press most, unify your damage type, attach a behaviour-changing Essence, then choose named builds.

A build starts with the Memory you press most often, not with a damage number. Essences change behaviour — chaining, cooldown refunds, healing on cast — and behaviour scales with how often it triggers. Put the strongest Essence on your shortest cooldown and the same Memory becomes a different skill.

The four steps

  1. Choose the core Memory. Whichever ability you will press every few seconds this run. Everything else supports it.
  2. Unify the damage type. Cold, fire, dark or physical. Mixed damage splits your Essences and halves their value.
  3. Attach a behaviour Essence to the core. Look for words like chain, reduce cooldown, heal on cast, or convert damage type.
  4. Point the Constellation at that direction. Only take Stars that feed your damage type, your defence, or the core skill.

The developer says the same thing in different words: a run is not about finding the right answer, it is about deciding what to make out of what you found.

Named builds that are circulating

These come from community guides and recorded runs, not from the developer. Treat them as starting points to verify on the current patch.

Mist, Aggressive ImmortalConstant hit-and-run meleeMovement speed Essences and hit-based cooldown refundsLow to medium
Vesper, Heal-to-Damage TankHealing converted into damageA heal Memory, barrier Stars and health scalingMedium
Bismuth, Pure Soul barrageThe Pure Soul missile MemoryIce Shield, Essence of Quicksilver and Essence of Vortex, plus the Self-Writing Story StarLow, but needs two specific Essences

Bismuth’s version is the cheapest to start because the two Essences it needs are common drops. The Self-Writing Story Star, which auto-casts your Memories, is the piece that turns it into a build rather than a gimmick.

What changed after the Starless Path update

Version 1.4 adjusted the balance of Memories, Essences and Traveler Stars, added new common Memories and Essences, and gave Shell a new Memory. Any build guide written before 17 September 2026 is describing a different balance. Check one thing before copying a build: does the guide name the version it was verified on? If not, test it before you commit a whole run.

When you cannot find the pieces

Order of priority when the run refuses to cooperate:

  • First, one defensive piece. A shield or heal Memory keeps you alive long enough to find damage.
  • Second, level the core. Dream Dust upgrades on the skill you press every few seconds beat spreading upgrades thin.
  • Third, take the damage type you already have. Do not restart your damage type mid-run because one better Memory appeared.
